This is by far my favorite coulee to visit during off-season, best time to avoid crowds. This time I found a scramble route to get to top of the narrow, elongated Umatilla Rock, which I had wanted to do during our previous visits. Coulee itself was impressive enough, but top of this rock provided views on all sides.
It was’t possible to get to north end of the Umatilla Rock due to a notch separating north end from rest of the rock. The notch was our turnaround point during the previous visit.
