Burnt Hill by Mount Zion and Maynard Peak in Olympic Mountains / 焚毀山丘

  • Reading time:6 mins read

Burnt Hill by Mount Zion and Maynard Peak overlooks the Dungeness River. The modest 4×4 Rock and Blyn Lookoug site by Sequim Bay is just to the east. Meanwhile, Highway 101 on the north offers the shortest way to these high points.

Morning Hike by Sequim Bay

Julie from college invited me to her holiday party tonight. So I looked for a new hill nearby and landed in Sequim, where another school friend, Darcy, lives. I asked Darcy to join us on the hike, but she declined at the last minute.

The dogs and I started from the gate 1.5 hours before sunrise. The sky lit up as we passed the high point at mile two, and then the path dipped to the end by the clearing. I was glad to have brought microspikes since it was icy higher up the road.

Burnt Hill Summit to 4×4 Rock

Besides the forested summit, it felt lifeless after sunrise as it remained cloudy. But we stayed to celebrate Sir Cody’s big day and played in the snow for a while. We then checked out the small summit tower before retracing steps back to the car.

Back at Highway 101, we drove half an hour east to the 4×4 Rock and Blyn Lookout Site. It took careful navigation through Snow Creek Road over some slush and debris. We later parked by the clearing off the fork on NF-2906.

Blyn Lookout Site Plus Exit

It was a straightforward walk to the fork past mile one. From the three-way, the unmapped road hugged the powerline clearing to the hilltop marked by a giant boulder. Then we returned to the crossing and went north in the mists.

Soon, we reached the lookout site in a mile but only stayed a few minutes. The clear-cut forest implied would-be views if not for the crappy weather. The clouds had slightly lifted when we went past the powerline back to the car.
