The Preface

Snowfall in the past two days had made most faraway places inaccessible. While waiting on the snowplow to clear the streets, I returned to Poo Poo Point. It’s been four years since our last visit due to the place’s popularity.

An early start in the cold always pays off in terms of beating the crowds. But seeing only two other cars when I arrived in the lot was still surprising. I walked across the paragliding landing field to the trailhead.

Chirico Trail to Paraglide Launching Lookout

The dry trail took me south toward the southwest ridge before climbing steadily. I met the super early hiker as they came down the path. Soon, slush appeared, followed by ice, where I put on microspikes and continued.

There was a tiny snowman on the bench overlooking the south. After re-entering the trees, I soon stumbled on a makeshift Christmas tree with blinking lights. Before long, the path took me through the final stretch to the launch site.

Poo Poo Point via Chirico Trail Views

The clouds sat just high enough to reveal the valley views below. The golden rays to the north above the mists suggested a clear sky. Then I took photos and sat by the picnic table to savor the morning vistas.

Soon, a noisy group appeared at the overlook, which was the perfect cue to leave. I briefly chatted with a kid and his mom before returning to the forest. Then more groups walked up as I reached the slushy area.
