Star Peak + Courtney Peak + Oval Peak on Sawtooth Ridge / 星峯

  • Reading time:6 mins read

Star Peak, Courtney Peak, and Oval Peak rest on the vast Sawtooth Ridge in Lake Chelan-Sawtooth Wilderness. At the same time, they are among Washington State’s 100 tallest peaks. Plus, the closeness of these peaks makes them doable in one leisurely trip if given ample time.

Star Peak, Courtney Peak, and Oval Peak

Last week we stayed close to home. Then this weekend, we ventured into someplace farther. Someone had told me in passing about the Wish Slam. So I thought we’d check out the hype surrounding the area.

We climbed Star Peak, Courtney Peak, and Oval Peak for this trip. But the pups hadn’t done anything this strenuous and turned out to be the most physically challenging one for them. Yet, we hiked into Star Lake and visited three peaks on day one.

Then the next day, we climbed Oval Peak on the way back to the trailhead. It was our fourth and final peak on this trip.

Gray Peak Was a Maybe

It was another weekend with gorgeous and hot weather. Gray Peak was at first a maybe. But since I had seen people climb it as a side trip, I thought we could give it a try. It was also hard to resist climbing it after seeing the proximity from Courtney Peak.

After climbing Star Peak and Courtney Peak, we were low on energy. So we took a power nap before leaving Courtney Peak. We crossed massive talus to Gray Peak and arrived at the top at sunset. Then we went back to camp in the evening before it became dark.

Oval Peak Plus Outro

Of all four peaks we went up in the last two days, Oval Peak took the longest to climb. I must have put the pups through hell since they slept through our summit photo session. We didn’t stay long at the top. The heat and the lack of trees were starting to get to us.

So glad to have left our packs by the junction. They would’ve added the extra weight while going up to Oval Peak. I know that the black lab would not have wanted to carry his backpack to the top and back.

One more slam down!
