Staying close to home and taking advantage of the rain after 4 PM forecast, pup and I set off to this oldie just off the I-90 corridor. Only a handful of cars in the lot when we pulled into the Mount Washington Trailhead at a quarter after 8 AM.

We first visited Greenway Mountain in spring of 2013 in lots of sunshine. With the recent warmer temperatures, most snow on the trail (if any) had already melted. We got off Mount Washington Trail before the last creek crossing at head of the basin and started scrambling southward toward the 4000′ saddle. The scramble portion was the only crux of this trip.

From the saddle, we hiked the service road while contouring above head of Change Creek Basin. At the road junction south of Point 4320, the left fork took us around the top of Otter Creek Basin to the road bend at 40′ below west of Greenway Mountain summit. The Cedar River Watershed facility marked the spot.

Wind had been blowing nonstop the moment we got on the road, but didn’t quite feel the effect with tall and thick growth on both sides. Thankfully this one woodsy summit provided much-needed protection from the cutting wind.

Views on the summit were limited due to the amount of trees. By peeking through branches I could see Mount Washington and Change Peak to the north, and McClellan Butte to the east. My favorite view was still Chester Morse Lake with ridges behind it to the south. By descending southeast ridge, high points along the ridge north of here from Mailbox Peak to Bandera Mountain then became visible.

After getting back down to the watershed facility, we reversed our route back to Mount Washington Trail. The rain came an hour earlier than forecasted as we hiked back down to the car. Snowshoes and ice ax were packed but never used.
