Rain all weekend long in the Cascades gave the excuse to do our first fall hike out east. We returned to Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park Backcountry a little over a year later, a conditioning outing for the black pup since his last trip with us in May of this year.

Some scrambling along edge of the basalt cliffs, then we followed the hikers trail to our turnaround spot at Sternberg Point. A large herd of Bighorn Sheep were spotted below the cliff bands. The area became increasingly windy and remained so for over an hour, including the time of our stay at the point.

Views of the long stretch of Columbia River were excellent, upstream to Sunland Park and downstream past Vantage Bridge. During our previous visit we hiked farther north to Point 1438 by Hole in the Wall, better views into Frenchman Coulee but no view of the bridge.

West wind had stopped blowing in early afternoon, as we dilly dallied our way along the basalt rim back to the parking lot.
